My new year resolutions
My first new year resolution is to excel in my 'O' levels.However,to do so, my Additional Maths has to be improved.I believe that through practise and hard work everyday,along with my tuition,I would be able to achieve this goal.Futhermore,by excelling in my 'O' levels,I would be able to make my parents and myself proud.
On top of that,my next resolution is to be able to lead the Guard of Honour for our school's Speech day.Being one of the many co-curricular activities leaders, I hope that by being a good leader , I would be able to make my uniformed group stand out from the others and be chosen to be the Guard of Honours. Therefore,it would allow me to fulfill my senior's motto of 'Living and Leaving a Legacy 'during my last year in St Patrick's School.
Thirdly,my resolution is to visit Hokkaido,Japan,again.The first time I went to Hokkaido was in 2007.Captivated by its beauty,I have longed to go back there again.However this time,not to go sight-seeing but to do the sport of skiing.This would allow me to experience the other side of Hokkaido and to broaden my horizon of the country.The food is sumptous, with its healthy ingredients and variety of food. The thought of it makes my mouth water!
Lastly,my resolution is to be more matured in my actions and thoughts.It is a personal goal as i have been wanting to become a pilot.This requires discipline and having good physical body.To achieve this , I would do exercise everyday,have a balanced diet and study hard,Moreover,i would have to brush up my attitude and personality as i become impatient very fast.
Therefore,i believe that by fulfilling my new year resolutions,i would be able to tell myself that i have done my best for the year and thaty i can be proud of it.Futhermore,by achieving all these,Iwould be able to have a better future in life and achieve my ambition of being a pilot.

In my opinion, i believe that the struggle towards equality is stiil an unfinished revolution. I believe so as currently there are places that races are discriminated. For example in a prison, gangs are based on their races and that if one person crosses into another race's gang you would get beat up and may even be killed. Therefore, racial discrimination still exist today. Even people who believed that Barrack Obama would not be president since he would be the first black president, is also considered racial discrimination.
Then comes slavery. Slavery first started in 1619, where Africans were taken by the British to work as slaves in Virginia. Since then more and more slaves were brought into America. Back then, slaves were forced to do labour intensive work by violence and given the bare minimum. Futhermore most of the slaves that worked were above child-bearing age which means that they were affected by their age.
Then in 1861 came the American civil war between states that had slaves and those that apposed slavery. Finally in 1865, the Republican army under the command of President Lincoln won the war. This finally made an end to slavery.
Next was the Declaration of Independence. In it, it states that " We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government". This means that everyone is the same in God's eyes and should stay the same on Earth. Anyone who tries to destroy this would be abolished by others.
However, after slavery was abolished, racial discrimination continued. For example, in the bus, blacks must give their seat to the whites or risk being prosecuted. Till today some forms of racial discrimination still exist thus the fight is still on for equality.
Speech
Good morning Mrs Juliana Err and fellow classmates, I am Ng Jun Xiang. Today, the motive of my speech is to tell you all why Singapore is the best place to live in. Singapore has been my home for 15 years and I have enjoyed every minute and second of it.
One reason for this comfort is security. Singapore law enforcement enforces the death penalty for serious offences. This would mean that people would think twice before going into drugs or committing murder. Futhermore, our homeland security forces work day and night to prevent terrorists acts from happening. This has been proven when J.I. activists were caught even before they could carry out there destructive acts. Constant patrolling of neighbourhoods ensures that crimes can be prevented. This allows people to be able to move around without the constant fear of being robbed or otherwise unlike other countries.
The next factor is racial harmony. Singapore has six main religions and four races which means that if racial riots does happen, it would be a catastrophe. However, ever since the racial riots in the past, our government has done its best to prevent it from happening again. Now, we get to experience the festivals of different cultures and understanding. Not to forget that you would get more public holidays! Moreover, we get to try many kinds of food from the Malays the Nasi Lemak to the Chinese Chicken Rice, the amount of variety is enough to confuse a person! So why not give it a try? You would never run out of food in this food paradise!
Lastly, Singapore has a very good education system. The literacy rate of Singapore is one of the highest around the world. Students are thought the basic fundamentals of many subjects, making them jacks of all trades. Singapore's education system is so renowned that people of other countries have also migrated here just to send their children into our schools!
Therefore, it is time to use your techno-savvy minds to encourage your foreign friends to come to Singapore when you have the chance as this country can provide them with security, knowledge and soothe their taste buds. Most of all, it is the most unique country in the world! Uniquely Singapore!
